Collaboration among stakeholders is key to combating Climate Change: Rino S. Donosepoetro, CEO-Standard Chartered Bank @ICON-IR 2024

Rino S. Donosepoetro, Keynote Panel Session ICON-IR 2024

What make global efforts to tackling global climate change effective?

  • As long as there is a goal and pathways without sacrificing or depriving Indonesia of its economic growth potential, I think this is where international communities would need to help.
  • Combatting climate change would need a collaboration of NGOs, private sector, capital owners, governments, publics, multilateral organizations and the likes.
  • On sustainability, I think the world actually needs to be aligned in: how do we help emerging markets? Every country actually would transition in its own pace, I think that has to be realized.

What are the challenges for Indonesia in pursuing energy transition?

  • One of the biggest, if not the biggest barriers to progress is the lack of adequate financing to full transition and decarbonization.
  • We also have the archipelagic nature of Indonesia, you cannot transition without transmission. That’s the problem.
  • Not all emerging markets are the same and Indonesia is a good case in point, but the world needs to understand. The world means the whole international world whether it’s public or private sector but of course, Indonesia does have- must have, rather, an ambitious goal. My point is I think Indonesia deserves the rights to use the cheapest energy source possible but with decarbonization pathways that is very clear but the world actually must understand, or the international coalition as you would need, to understand and agree to support that.
